A World Gone Wrong

6Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them.H120H2490H7231H5921H6440H127H1323H3205 2The sons of God saw the beautiful womenc and took any they wanted as their wives.H1121H430H7200H1323H120H2007H2896H3947H802H977 3Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not put up withc humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years."H3068H559H7307H5769H1777H120H1571H1320H7683H3117H3967H6242H8141 4In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times.H5303H776H3117H310H3651H834H1121H430H935H1323H120H3205H1992H1368H5769H582H8034 5The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.H3068H7200H7451H120H7227H776H3336H4284H3820H7535H7451H3117 6So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.H5162H3068H6213H120H776H6087H413H3820 7And the LORD said, "I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them."H3068H559H4229H120H1254H6440H127H120H5704H929H7431H5775H8064H5162H6213 8But Noah found favor with the LORD.H5146H4672H2580H5869H3068

The Story of Noah

9This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.H8435H5146H5146H6662H376H8549H1755H5146H1980H430 10Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.H5146H3205H7969H1121H8035H2526H3315 11Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence.H776H7843H6440H430H776H4390H2555 12God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt.H430H7200H776H7843H1320H7843H1870H776 13So God said to Noah, "I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!H430H559H5146H7093H1320H935H6440H776H4390H2555H6440H7843H854H776 14"Build a large boatc from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior.H6213H8392H1613H6086H7064H6213H854H8392H3722H1004H2351H3724 15Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet highc.H6213H753H8392H7969H3967H520H7341H2572H520H6967H7970H520 16Leave an 18-inch openingc below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper.H6672H6213H8392H520H3615H4605H6607H8392H7760H6654H8482H8145H7992H6213 17"Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.H2009H589H935H3999H4325H776H7843H1320H7307H2416H8478H8064H3605H776H1478 18But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives.H6965H1285H935H413H8392H859H1121H802H1121H802 19Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood.H2416H1320H8147H935H8392H2421H2145H5347 20Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive.H5775H4327H929H4327H7431H127H4327H8147H935H2421 21And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals."H3947H3978H398H622H402 22So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.H6213H5146H430H6680H6213

The Flood Covers the Earth

7When everything was ready, the LORD said to Noah, "Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous.H3068H559H5146H935H1004H8392H7200H6662H6440H2088H1755 2Take with you seven pairs—male and female—of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrificec, and take one pair of each of the others.H2889H929H3947H7651H7651H376H802H929H2889H1931H8147H376H802 3Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. There must be a male and a female in each pair to ensure that all life will survive on the earth after the flood.H5775H8064H7651H7651H2145H5347H2421H2233H2421H6440H776 4Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created."H5750H7651H3117H4305H776H705H3117H705H3915H3605H3351H6213H4229H5921H6440H127 5So Noah did everything as the LORD commanded him.H5146H6213H3068H6680 6Noah was 600 years old when the flood covered the earth.H5146H8337H3967H8141H1121H3999H4325H776 7He went on board the boat to escape the flood—he and his wife and his sons and their wives.H5146H935H1121H802H1121H802H8392H6440H4325H3999 8With them were all the various kinds of animals—those approved for eating and for sacrifice and those that were not—along with all the birds and the small animals that scurry along the ground.H2889H929H929H2889H5775H7430H127 9They entered the boat in pairs, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah.H935H8147H8147H5146H8392H2145H5347H834H430H6680H5146 10After seven days, the waters of the flood came and covered the earth.H7651H3117H4325H3999H776 11When Noah was 600 years old, on the seventeenth day of the second month, all the underground waters erupted from the earth, and the rain fell in mighty torrents from the sky.H8141H8337H3967H8141H5146H2416H8145H2320H7651H6240H3117H2320H2088H3117H4599H7227H8415H1234H699H8064H6605 12The rain continued to fall for forty days and forty nights.H1653H776H705H3117H705H3915 13That very day Noah had gone into the boat with his wife and his sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their wives.H6106H3117H935H5146H8035H2526H3315H1121H5146H5146H802H7969H802H1121H8392 14With them in the boat were pairs of every kind of animal—domestic and wild, large and small—along with birds of every kind.H1992H2416H4327H929H4327H7431H7430H776H4327H5775H4327H6833H3671 15Two by two they came into the boat, representing every living thing that breathes.H935H5146H8392H8147H8147H1320H834H7307H2416 16A male and female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD closed the door behind them.H935H935H2145H5347H1320H430H6680H3068H5462 17For forty days the floodwaters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth.H3999H705H3117H776H4325H7235H5375H8392H7311H776 18As the waters rose higher and higher above the ground, the boat floated safely on the surface.H4325H1396H7235H3966H776H8392H3212H6440H4325 19Finally, the water covered even the highest mountains on the earth,H4325H1396H3966H3966H776H1364H2022H8478H8064H3680 20rising more than twenty-two feetc above the highest peaks.H6240H2568H520H4605H4325H1396H2022H3680 21All the living things on earth died—birds, domestic animals, wild animals, small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the people.H1320H1478H7430H776H5775H929H2416H8318H8317H776H120 22Everything that breathed and lived on dry land died.H639H5397H7307H2416H2724H4191 23God wiped out every living thing on the earth—people, livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and the birds of the sky. All were destroyed. The only people who survived were Noah and those with him in the boat.H3351H4229H6440H127H120H929H7431H5775H8064H4229H776H5146H389H7604H834H8392 24And the floodwaters covered the earth for 150 days.H4325H1396H776H3967H2572H3117

The Flood Recedes

8But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and livestock with him in the boat. He sent a wind to blow across the earth, and the floodwaters began to recede.H430H2142H5146H2416H929H8392H430H5674H7307H5674H5921H776H4325H7918 2The underground waters stopped flowing, and the torrential rains from the sky were stopped.H4599H8415H699H8064H5534H1653H8064H3607 3So the floodwaters gradually receded from the earth. After 150 days,H4325H7725H776H1980H7725H7097H3967H2572H3117H4325H2637 4exactly five months from the time the flood beganc, the boat came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.H8392H5117H7637H2320H6240H7651H3117H2320H2022H780 5Two and a half months laterc, as the waters continued to go down, other mountain peaks became visible.H4325H2637H1980H5704H6224H2320H6224H259H2320H7218H2022H7200 6After another forty days, Noah opened the window he had made in the boatH7093H705H3117H5146H6605H2474H8392H6213 7and released a raven. The bird flew back and forth until the floodwaters on the earth had dried up.H7971H6158H3318H3318H7725H4325H3001H776 8He also released a dove to see if the water had receded and it could find dry ground.H7971H3123H7200H4325H7043H6440H127 9But the dove could find no place to land because the water still covered the ground. So it returned to the boat, and Noah held out his hand and drew the dove back inside.H3123H4672H4494H3709H7272H7725H8392H4325H6440H776H7971H3027H3947H935H8392 10After waiting another seven days, Noah released the dove again.H2342H312H7651H3117H3254H7971H3123H8392 11This time the dove returned to him in the evening with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. Then Noah knew that the floodwaters were almost gone.H3123H935H6256H6153H6310H2132H5929H2965H5146H3045H4325H7043H776 12He waited another seven days and then released the dove again. This time it did not come back.H3176H312H7651H3117H7971H3123H7725H3254H5750 13Noah was now 601 years old. On the first day of the new year, ten and a half months after the flood beganc, the floodwaters had almost dried up from the earth. Noah lifted back the covering of the boat and saw that the surface of the ground was drying.H8337H3967H8141H7223H259H2320H4325H2717H776H5146H5493H4372H8392H7200H6440H127H2717 14Two more months went byc, and at last the earth was dry!H8145H2320H7651H6242H3117H2320H776H3001 15Then God said to Noah,H430H1696H5146H559 16"Leave the boat, all of you—you and your wife, and your sons and their wives.H3318H8392H802H1121H1121H802 17Release all the animals—the birds, the livestock, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—so they can be fruitful and multiply throughout the earth."H3318H2416H1320H5775H929H7431H7430H776H8317H776H6509H7235H776 18So Noah, his wife, and his sons and their wives left the boat.H5146H3318H1121H802H1121H802 19And all of the large and small animals and birds came out of the boat, pair by pair.H2416H7431H5775H3605H7430H776H4940H3318H8392 20Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and there he sacrificed as burnt offerings the animals and birds that had been approved for that purposec.H5146H1129H4196H3068H3947H2889H929H2889H5775H5927H5930H4196 21And the LORD was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice and said to himself, "I will never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things.H3068H7306H5207H7381H3068H559H413H3820H3254H7043H127H120H5668H3336H120H3820H7451H5271H3254H5221H2416H6213 22As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night."H776H3117H2233H7105H7120H2527H7019H2779H3117H3915H7673
